Notice to Appear (NTA)

A formal document issued by immigration authorities to initiate removal proceedings against a foreign national. The NTA specifies the charges of inadmissibility or deportability and requires the individual to appear before an immigration judge. The document includes details such as the individual’s identity, the alleged violations of immigration law, and the date and location of the immigration court hearing. Failure to appear can result in an automatic order of removal.

Etymology

The term “notice” comes from the Latin “notitia,” meaning “a being known or knowledge.” “Appear” is derived from the Latin “apparere,” meaning “to come into sight.”
