Arrival/Departure record (Form I-94) meaning :
The Form I-94 is an essential document for foreign travelers entering the United States. It may be in paper or electronic form, issued by U.S. customs authorities upon arrival at entry points into the country. This document verifies legal entry into the country and specifies the authorized departure date.
The Form I-94 contains the authorized admission date and admission record number. Additionally, it includes crucial details such as the traveler’s name, passport number, exact date of entry into the United States, admission class (e.g., visitor, student, etc.), and the country that issued the passport. These details are essential for legally documenting individuals’ entry and stay in the United States.
The Duration of Status (D/S) is indicated on the passport admission stamp or paper Form I-94. Students and scholars under F or J status should receive a stamp marked “D/S”. This designation allows them to legally remain in the United States as long as they maintain their status and their Form I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) remains valid. Otherwise, they may encounter immigration issues.
Each I-94 record is identified by an eleven-digit admission number. This number is required for Department of Motor Vehicles transactions or employment procedures. Upon each return to the United States, a new I-94 number is assigned to the individual, ensuring accurate tracking of their admission status. This number is also referred to as the departure number or admission record number.
For individuals who haven’t received Form I-94, they must fill out Form I-94W, typically applicable to visa waiver program visitors. Crew members, however, require Form I-95. Despite different names, these documents serve the same purpose as the standard Form I-94.
To obtain an I-94 card upon arrival in the United States, travelers have two options. Here’s how to obtain both versions :
- Obtaining an electronic Form I-94 : This version is automatically assigned to travelers arriving by air or sea. Upon arrival, present your passport and visa to a CBP agent. The agent will enter your information into their electronic tracking system and stamp your passport. They will then provide printed instructions on accessing the electronic Form I-94.
- Obtaining a paper version of Form I-94 : This option is reserved for travelers arriving in the United States by land. It involves receiving a small white card attached to the passport after inspection. Before leaving the United States, it is important to surrender the Form I-94 to the appropriate authorities.
